What does it mean to be a philanthropist right now?

As Spring is finally here and has also been associated with renewal, it feels like a timely reminder to pause and take stock.
In recent days, I have been reading about further reductions in UK overseas aid, adding to a wider shift in global funding systems that is already underway. These changes have immediate consequences for communities that need this support, and they reshape the environment in which philanthropy operates.
It raises a question I keep coming back to: what does it mean to be a philanthropist right now?
In many conversations, there is a quiet but present sense of pressure. Not only from external uncertainty, but from within. A questioning of whether efforts are reaching the right places, whether they are enough, and how to stay effective in a landscape that continues to change.
For many, this work is shaped over time. Values often take root early and are then refined through experience and defining moments that deepen perspective. That blend of early influence and lived reality continues to guide how people show up today.
In moments like this, I return to a few simple anchors:
• What first drew me to this work
• The progress already made
• The partnerships built along the way
Uncertainty is part of the current reality, but this season is also a reminder that growth often follows periods of change and challenge, much like Spring emerging after a long, snowy Winter, bringing renewal and a new direction.
