“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart” - Nelson Mandela.

Last week, I reflected on the power of passion and how it inspires those around us. But passion on its own isn’t enough. For it to truly land, we have to speak in a way the other person can hear and connect with. It’s a simple but powerful reminder: the language we use has the power to create powerful ripples, far beyond what we realise.
Whether you are cultivating a relationship to advance your philanthropy or just in your personal life, the right approach makes all the difference. Tone, language, and timing can completely change an outcome.
We have all been in situations where the wrong words or tone escalate tension. But when we approach that same conversation with curiosity, openness, and a genuine desire to understand, we don’t just resolve the issue: we often strengthen the relationship for the long term.
Experience also taught me that when we understand the person’s language of the heart, mind, and culture, we can move beyond words to meaning.
Let’s stop for a bit and reflect on this week by asking:
• Am I using language that conveys what I mean?
• Is my communication style building the relationships and impact I want to see?
If you would like to explore how language can cultivate deeper relationships in philanthropy, I would love to hear from you. Please drop me a line.
