Producer and Director: Two Stories, One Film

What if philanthropists and organisations stopped seeing each other as being on opposite sides of the table?

Every week, the scripts arrive. Proposals, impact reports, lunch invitations. Each describes a real need, and you cannot say yes to everything.

If you are a philanthropist, you are the film producer, looking for a story you believe in, a story which resonates with you and what you stand for.

If you lead an implementing organisation, you are the director. You know who is affected, what could change and why your approach works.

The producer brings vision, resources and a personal reason for caring. The director brings craft, a team and the truth from the ground. Neither makes the film alone.

Two Stories, One Table

You are probably wondering why I chose the film analogy. I want to show that philanthropists and organisations aren't on opposite sides of the table, but on the same production, each bringing what the other needs.

For Directors: Truth First

Reshape your story to please the person across the table, and they will sense it. Instead, bring reality close enough to reach head and heart. Make the need tangible and show what could change. The strongest stories do not manipulate emotion; they make reality impossible to overlook.

Emotion opens the door; evidence lets someone walk through it. The Modern Philanthropist report found that 35% of high-net-worth donors hold back because they lack confidence in how charities operate, while 32% would give generously to one with clear goals, a clear approach, and clear impact. The gap is understanding, and a good story closes it.

For Producers: Share your Story Too

A director works best with a producer who explains what drew them to the work. Share why the cause matters to you, what change you hope for and what you offer beyond money. A partnership cannot grow from one story alone.

Rehearse, Don't Perform

Like an actor, know your story so well that it no longer needs a script. Say it aloud. Notice where you hesitate, explain too much or lose the emotional truth. Then, across the table, you are not performing. You are sharing.

From Story to Partnership

When a producer and director see the same film, need and motivation meet. Rapport builds, and a first conversation becomes a lasting partnership. Not every film gets made.

But when the right producer meets the right director, they create something neither could make alone.

Whether you are a producer or a director, if you need help finding, shaping or telling your story, this is exactly what I do. Would love to hear your story.
